I don’t really like wedding fairs. So why am I joining one?
Years ago, before photography became my job, I worked at a travel agency.
I still remember how disappointed I was when I didn’t get chosen to represent the company at Matkamessut, Finland’s big travel fair. I thought it must be so much fun. All those people, all that energy, getting to be there and represent the company — I really wanted in.
The following year, I got my chance.
I think the first day I spent about 12 hours there. Then ten. Then eight and eight. By the end of that weekend, my opinion on fairs had changed quite a bit. :D
And somewhere around then I decided they simply weren’t my thing.
I do understand the idea.
Having so many talented people, businesses and possibilities under one roof can be wonderful.
But for me, there is just too much happening at once. Too many people, too much movement, too much information. It’s easy to get lost in it all — and just as easy to walk straight past something, or someone, who might actually have been important.
So wedding fairs have never really tempted me either.
Until this year, when I received a personal invitation to join a small wedding inspiration event at Kullanpuu.
And this one made me stop and think. Because the idea is quite different.
A small event in a beautiful place. No enormous exhibition hall, no endless rows of stands. Just wedding inspiration, beautiful surroundings and a chance to actually meet the people behind the businesses.
Human to human.
That sounds much more like me.
So, apparently, I’m doing a wedding fair after all.
The people you choose matter
Your photographer’s portfolio matters. The price matters. Of course they do.
But there is also a person behind both.
Your wedding team will be around you for much more than whatever number of hours you see written in a quote. There are conversations and planning before the wedding. And on the day itself, these people are invited into some of the most personal, emotional and important moments of your life.
Your photographer in particular can be surprisingly close.
So I really don’t think it should be irrelevant who that person is.
When I receive a wedding inquiry, I usually suggest a little video call before booking. It’s convenient, it works from anywhere in the world, and it gives us a chance to see each other and talk before making any decisions.
But when there is a chance to do the same thing face to face, in a beautiful place, with nowhere to rush to — why not?
And that is probably the biggest reason I said yes to Kullanpuu.

Or just come and say hi and see what it feels like to talk in real life.
The event is free to visit, and I’m pretty sure you’ll find plenty of inspiration for your wedding while you’re there.
And who knows. Maybe Kullanpuu will be where we meet for the first time — but not the last.
