Between awkwardness and ease, tension and trust, something very human happens — and that’s often where the most meaningful photographs begin.

The beginning of a photoshoot is often the most energy-consuming part for everyone involved.

For the people being photographed, obviously. Because being seen is vulnerable. Because the mind immediately starts asking:

“What am I supposed to do?”

“How should I stand?”

“Do I look awkward?”

But honestly, it’s intense for me too. Because at the beginning, I’m searching constantly: for light, for rhythm, for the right emotional frequency, for the exact way into connection with these particular people.

There is no universal formula for human beings. No button that says: “Relax and look beautiful now.”

Sometimes those first minutes feel messy. Chaotic. Slightly tense.

Like an airplane during takeoff — when the engines are working the hardest before finally reaching that quiet altitude where everything begins to flow naturally.

And strangely enough, I think there is something beautiful about that part too.

Because it’s real.

I don’t believe photography should only preserve perfectly curated happiness and flawless emotions.

Life is not like that. We are not like that.

Some of the most beautiful photographs are born exactly in those first searching moments. You can feel the tension, the hesitation, the emotional movement underneath the surface. And why wouldn’t you?

Those moments exist in life too. They are part of us.

Then something shifts.

People stop monitoring themselves so carefully. They trust me a little more. They trust each other again.

They trust the process.

And suddenly everyone can breathe again.

That evolution is one of my favourite things to witness during a session:

losing yourself for a moment, then slowly returning back to yourself again.

Not a polished performance. Not a perfect mask worn for an occasion. But real presence. One human being next to another.

And honestly, that is probably the biggest skill I’ve developed over the years:

not forcing people into poses, but helping completely different people with different backgrounds and "posing" experience move through that difficult beginning and arrive at the place where they simply begin to be.

If you are looking for relaxed, documentary-inspired photography in Helsinki — with space for real emotions, movement, imperfection and connection — you are very welcome here.
